It is reported that after the war broke out in February of last year almost 5 million Ukrainians have fled into Europe. And it is estimated that 400,000 of them came to Germany. On 23rd of April at 2pm Good News Frankfurt Church went out to the city centre to put on an event for the refugees under the slogan ‘Together We are Strong.’ The event was about offering consolation to those affected by the war and also for Ukrainians to express their gratitude towards German people. The church applied for a license to hold the event at the most famous shopping centre in My Zeil and astonishingly they were able to get it only one day after the application. Brothers and sisters from Germany and Ukraine invited officials and also promoted the event on social media. Many media outlets also took interest in this event.
The ambassador of Ukraine to Germany took part and delivered a message of comfort to his people at the event. Also Natalia who was a human rights lawyer and became a refugee, and Anya who was a teacher who also became a refugee came to the event to help those who were facing the same challenges that they were facing.
Voice of Ukraine a band of 3 Ukrainian sisters sang Ukrainian songs which touched the hearts of many present Ukrainians, especially the Ukrainian son ‘Oh, red eye and ball on top of Grass’ drew tears from the crowd as they shouted ‘Slave Ukranini’ (Glory to Ukraine).
Missionary Ryu from Kiev spoke about the Redwood Trees in Canada and how their roots support each other to grow very tall and in the same way although everyone is different here if one gets connected to one another we can also help each other to grow stronger and taller. Moreover, since it was Easter the missionary spoke about how the blood of Jesus washed away all our sins and gave us victory.
My husband couldn’t leave Ukraine so I came to Ukraine with my kids. My city isn’t as badly affected as the other cities, but the war is making me depressed, nonetheless. I hope the war will end soon. To see so many displaced Ukrainians here in Germany, I could not hold back my tears. The music the dancing, what a great event. – Elena
Many people came to the organisers expressing their gratitude and asking them to hold such events at their cities too. The ambassador also wanted to do more such events for Ukraine in the future. In Genesis 15 God took Abraham out of the tent and showed them the stars in heaven promising that his descendants will be like the stars in heaven. God led 5 million refugees to Europe. It wasn’t the war but God who led them here and I believe that God will use this as an opportunity for the Gospel to spread further in Europe.
